Introduction to Choosing a CMS

Choosing a content management system (CMS) can be a difficult undertaking when you're diving in for the first time. There are so many options available, it's hard to know what the best solution is. What you do know is that you don't have time to update back-end coding each time you want to alter a page on your website.

You need a better way to manage and organize online content. You need a CMS!

If you're unfamiliar with the term, a CMS (or "content management system") serves to house and publish content online. To give you an everyday example, the blogging platform WordPress is a content management system.

The process for use is generally simple; the user fills in content - usually into text boxes and fields - which is then used to populate the front end of a website (which is what you see when you visit the URL).

In the world of CMS, there are two main categories: open source and proprietary. In the broadest terms, proprietary systems often include hosting, individual customization and live support, while open source systems provide a do-it-yourself installable CMS with community-driven support and upgrades.

You'll often see open source solutions used for creating templated personal websites or blogs; rich content and highly functional sites can get quite complex and aren't commonly a good match. If you're handy with FTP, database management, troubleshooting and back-end coding and have IT resources at your fingertips, you're probably in a good position to use an open source CMS. But, if you're looking for a full service solution that includes installation, live support and ongoing maintenance, you'll want a proprietary platform.

Open source solutions include platforms like Drupal, Joomla, and, as mentioned earlier, WordPress; WebCanada produces a proprietary system called Live CMS.

In our eight-part series, we'll show you the differences between the two, and help you to decide which is right for you.
