Choosing a CMS Part 3: Customization

Every kind of CMS is customizable, though all are customizable to a different extent.
Open Source CMS are typically completely customizable, provided you're willing to roll up your sleeves and code it yourself. If you're not up to the challenge of coding from scratch, there are also a number of pre-existing plugins that you can slot in when and where you need them. You'll again be climbing into the back-end and configuring and troubleshooting on your own - and after all the work you put in, the plugins may not actually do what you want them to do! Customization in the open source world is often achieved through the vast number of themes that are available through independent developers. These theme developers are as varied as the themes themselves and in a crowd source community the quality of the coding is not controlled.
Proprietary CMS offer a full range of customization, with the added luxury of someone else doing the dirty work. A good proprietary solution should always be tailored exactly to your business needs. Where all customizations are developed in house you'll end up with a product that contains no rogue functionality or confusing extras to conflict with your core tools. Additionally, you'll benefit from the support of designers, developers and project managers that will guide you through the world of CMS and online marketing and will help you create a platform that provides you with exactly what you need.
